Poll that reveals half of patients denied drug coverage featured by HealthcareDive

PAN Foundation’s Center for Patient Research published the results of a July 2025 national poll with patients which found that more than half of adults with commercial health plans were told by their insurer that their medication for a chronic or rare disease was no longer covered. The poll findings were recently featured by HealthcareDive, an Informa healthcare industry news site.

In addition, almost half of adults said their health insurance plan referred them to a third-party company to help them obtain the medications through alternative measures. Of those who decided to work with the external companies, 92 percent reported they were negatively impacted by treatment delays of one month or more–with 7 percent of patients reporting treatment delays of six months or more. Amy Niles, chief mission officer of the PAN Foundation, said, “The findings of our research indicate how prevalent these practices are.”

HealthcareDive also discusses the price of prescription drugs, the use of utilization management practices, and the increased cost of healthcare coverage to employers.
