The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation’s Center for Patient Research provides insights into the diverse needs of patients as they navigate the challenges accessing affordable, equitable healthcare.
Through rigorous methodologies, the PAN Foundation’s Center for Patient Research aims to understand the challenges faced by patients, translate these findings into actionable knowledge for healthcare stakeholders and policymakers, and help inform policies and educational opportunities leading to accessible, affordable, and equitable, healthcare for all.
Our research approach
The PAN Foundation is committed to a patient-centered methodological approach that prioritizes the perspectives and lived experiences of diverse populations. Our primary goal is for our research to help inform policies and practices that lead to a more equitable and patient-centered healthcare system.
State of Patient Access Report
The PAN Foundation’s Center for Patient Research published our inaugural State of Patient Access Report in 2024, based on a nationwide survey conducted by The Harris Poll. This annual, flagship initiative aims to identify the challenges patients with chronic health conditions face when accessing affordable, equitable healthcare. A key component of the report is the scorecard developed using composite ratings across five categories:
- Overall Access to Care
- Relationship with Healthcare Professionals
- Affordability of Prescription Medications
- Access to Treatment through Healthcare Plans
- Financial Toxicity
Patient-centered national polling and surveys
We conduct national polls and patient surveys to gain insight into the challenges individuals living with chronic diseases face accessing the care they need. This work guides PAN’s policy work and helps us identify new program and educational offerings.

The need for patient assistance programs
The PAN Foundation’s national polling and analysis have revealed that, even with historic Medicare Part D reforms, many patients will continue to struggle with their out-of-pocket prescription drug costs. Read our full findings from this research and hear first-hand accounts from PAN patients.
