Helping patients with wait lists

Healthcare professionals and caregivers can join wait lists and apply from wait lists for their patients

How wait lists work

The disease fund wait list is a list of patients waiting to apply for a closed fund for a copay, health insurance premium, or transportation grant. Patients may add themselves to the wait list or be added by their provider, pharmacy, or caregiver.

Patients must be eligible for the closed disease fund before signing up for a wait list. There is no limit to how many patients you can sign up for a wait list, though you must sign up each patient individually.

The wait list enhances our ability to serve patients on a first-come, first-served basis by giving those on the wait list the first opportunities to apply for assistance when a fund opens. Patients on the wait list get the first chance to apply for a fund when it opens. When a disease fund becomes available, we will notify you by email to apply before we open the fund to the public.

All closed funds have a wait list. If funding runs out before all eligible wait-listed patients get assistance, the remaining patients will stay on the wait list, but move closer to the top. You will be notified the next time the disease fund opens in wait list status and will have to apply again.

Funds at other organizations and using FundFinder

Each closed disease fund on PAN’s website will also list up-to-date referrals if there is an open program at another foundation. Patients are welcome to remain on PAN’s wait list in addition to other organization’s lists.

If a fund is closed, you can also sign up for a FundFinder account. Making an account lets you browse a list of over 200 financial assistance programs, including the PAN Foundation. You can then follow any fund you want to get notified as soon as assistance is available.

How to add patients to a wait list

When a disease fund is closed, signing a patient up for the wait list is easy. You can:

  • Add your patients via the PAN website, or
  • Add your patients via your PAN portal account, or
  • Call us at 1-866-316-7263 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET.

Information you will need

Please have the following information ready to complete sign-up for the wait list:

  • Patient’s diagnosis
  • Patient information: first and last name, date of birth, social security number, home address, phone number, and a valid patient or provider email address
  • Your contact information: first and last name, email address. You may also add the contact information of another individual from your practice.

Important note about email addresses

Note that PAN sends critical wait list status messages to the email address used when signing up for the wait list. Only individuals with valid email addresses can sign up for the wait list. Make sure that the email address used is checked often. If your patient does not have an email address, you can provide your email address on the patient’s behalf to be notified when the disease fund is accepting applications. You can also add additional individuals from your practice to be notified.

Adding patients from the PAN website

Visit our disease fund directory and search for your patient’s disease fund or medication. When you find the closed fund, click “sign up for the wait list.” You need to enter your patient’s name, social security number, date of birth, email address, and contact address. You can also add a caregiver’s email if available.

Adding patients via the portal

Log in to your PAN portal account at panapply.org.

Removing patients from a wait list

If your patient no longer needs help, send us a secure message in the portal or call us at 1-866-316-7263 or to remove their name from the wait list.

If your patient has received assistance from another foundation but may need help in the future, you are welcome to keep them on the wait list.

Keep in mind that your patient will be automatically removed from the wait list the next time the fund opens in wait list status if they do not apply.

How to apply from a wait list

When the relevant disease fund has available funding, you will receive an email notifying you that the fund is open to patients on the wait list. This email will contain:

  • Your patient’s name
  • Their unique wait list ID
  • A unique link that will direct you to your PAN portal

Note: this information is unique to your patient and cannot be used for other patients.

You will have two business days to apply online using the unique link in the email, or by calling us at 1-866-316-7263 to enroll your patient in the fund.

After two business days, the link will expire. If you do not apply, your patient will be removed from the wait list. They may sign up for a wait list again anytime, but they will be placed at the end of the queue.

After you apply

Within four business days, you will be notified by email about grant approval. If your patient is awarded a grant, they can begin to use that grant immediately.

If a patient is not awarded a grant because the funds have run out, that patient will stay on the wait list and moved closer to the top of the list. They won’t lose their place on the wait list. You will be notified the next time the disease fund opens in wait list status.

If your patient does not apply while the wait list window is open, they will be removed from the wait list. We encourage you to check your email regularly, so you do not miss an important funding notification. They may sign up for a wait list again anytime, but they will be placed at the end of the queue.
