Specialty drug costs are skyrocketing – and so is the complexity of patients’ access to them. Copay accumulators, copay maximizers, and alternative funding programs are reshaping pharmacy benefits and adding additional layers to the process of medication coverage and affordability for patients prescribed life-altering specialty therapies. Though these programs aim to cut prescription spending for payers and employers, they can create major delays, financial stress, and barriers to therapy.

Building on JMCP’s most-viewed articles of 2024, this session dives deep into these cost-shifting programs with real-world data, expert insights, and multiple stakeholder perspectives. Hear from experts on the latest research, including the first multisite prospective study comparing patient outcomes in alternative funding programs, and learn how these strategies are impacting care across the country. Managed care pharmacists must be ready to navigate – and influence – the future of benefit design.

Patients enrolled in commercial (or private) insurance face critical access issues that delay their care. Health plans are using harmful programs—like copay accumulators, copay maximizers, and alternative funding programs—to limit access to medications and increase the out-of-pocket burden for patients. These three distinct, complex programs are challenging to understand and even more difficult to recognize when faced with one. That’s why an intentional focus on educating patients, healthcare professionals, and advocates about these nuanced programs is essential. In addition, knowing what to do in response to these programs, including how to leverage real-life stories to advocate against them, is critical to improving healthcare access for all. By the end of this session, you will be able to:

    • Explain the fundamental aspects of how copay accumulators, copay maximizers, and alternative funding programs work and how they negatively impact patients.
    • Understand the differences between these programs and the practical steps healthcare professionals and advocates can take in response to them.
    • Identify specific actions that you can take to advocate against these harmful programs at the national level.

Polling from the PAN Foundation’s Center for Patient Research finds one in three (31 percent) adults with a chronic condition have medical debt. And among those individuals, half (50 percent) have at least $1,000 in debt, with an average of $3,480. Unfortunately, many patients and healthcare professionals don’t know where to get help when out-of-pocket medication costs are unaffordable. Join our session to participate in a live focus group to share your first-hand experiences navigating the financial assistance landscape and barriers to healthcare access. Also hear directly from other patients and healthcare professionals who have navigated the process and learn about the tools and resources available to help make the process easier. In this session, you will:

    • Amy Niles, Chief Mission Officer, PAN Foundation
    • Sheila Arquette, President and CEO, National Association of Specialty Pharmacy
    • Elizabeth Johnson, Board Member and Past President, National Association of Medication Access & Patient Advocacy

High out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs, particularly specialty medications, can often lead patients to delay or go without their needed medications and treatments. In fact, a Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 43% of U.S. adults report that they or a family member in their household has put off or postponed needed healthcare due to cost. And while financial assistance options are available from multiple sources—including the federal government, state government, nonprofit foundations, and the private sector—many specialty pharmacies, healthcare professionals, and patients aren’t aware of or don’t know how to navigate these options. Join us to hear from an expert panel as they walk through the various options, who is eligible for which options, and how specialty pharmacies can help their patients get connected with support.
