The PAN Foundation opens new graft versus host disease patient assistance fund

The PAN Foundation today opened a new patient assistance program for people living with graft versus host disease. Graft versus host disease is a rare immune disorder that may occur after certain stem cell or bone marrow transplants, where the transplanted tissue views the host tissue as foreign and attacks the body.

According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, graft versus host disease affects 60 percent of all bone marrow transplants. It can be acute or chronic, and risk increases with age. Chronic symptoms can last for years or decades.

“Thousands of people are affected by graft versus host disease each year and some may require treatment for ten years or more. We are pleased to help those living with this serious disease to afford their out-of-pocket prescription costs,” said PAN President and CEO Dan Klein. “We are appreciative to our generous donors who help to make this assistance fund possible.”

Patients who qualify are eligible to receive $6,200 per year in financial assistance to pay for the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance costs associated with their treatment for graft versus host disease.

Eligibility requirements
To get financial assistance for graft versus host disease, patients must:

  • Be getting treatment for graft versus host disease.
  • Have Medicare health insurance that covers the qualifying medication or product.
  • Have an income that falls at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level.

How to apply
Patients or caregivers applying on their behalf can apply for assistance using the PAN Foundation’s online patient portal. To apply on behalf of a patient, providers can use the provider portal, while pharmacists can use the pharmacy portal. A series of how-to guides are also available for the patient portal, including common tasks like creating an account and applying for assistance online. PAN grant recipients may also qualify for transportation assistance to allow them to get to doctor’s appointments and pharmacy visits.
