Second and renewal grants

Understand the difference between second grants and renewal grants, and when and how to apply for each grant

Second grants and renewal grants sound similar, but they are different in a few ways.

You can apply for a second grant within the same initial 12-month grant eligibility period if you run out of funds and your balance is $0. Second grants apply only to co-pay and health insurance premium grants.

You can apply for a renewal grant within 30 days of the end of your initial 12-month eligibility period to start a new 12-month eligibility period if the fund is open. Renewal grants apply to all types of PAN grants: co-pay, health insurance premium, and transportation.

Second grants

If your current PAN grant balance is $0 but you need more money to pay for medication before your eligibility period ends, you can apply for a second grant for yourself or for your patient if the fund is open. If approved, you will be able to use second grant funds during the rest of your eligibility period.

Second grants are only applicable to co-pay and health insurance premium grants.

To qualify, your current grant balance must be $0 and the disease fund must be open.

If the disease fund is closed, join the wait list so you can be notified when funding is available. When you receive the wait list confirmation email, please note your wait list ID number—you will need this when you apply for a second grant.

When to apply

You must apply for a second grant while your initial 12-month eligibility period is still active and has not ended yet.

How to apply

The easiest and fastest way to apply for a second grant is to log in to your portal account. On your patient dashboard, you will find the patient name, disease fund, and the balance of the grant. If the balance is $0 and the eligibility period is still current, there will be a button under the “actions” column to apply for a second grant.

Click “apply for a second grant” and your request will process automatically and confirm enrollment after a successful application. You do not need to take any other actions.

Renewal grants

If the 12-month grant eligibility period has ended, or is about to end within 30 days, and you need money for another 12 months, you can apply to renew the grant for yourself or on behalf of a patient if the disease fund is open. If a renewal grant is approved, a new 12-month eligibility period begins.

Renewal grants are applicable to all types of PAN grants: co-pay, health insurance premium, and transportation.

When to apply

You can apply to renew your grant up to 30 days before the current grant period ends, even if there is a grant balance remaining. You can also apply after the first grant period has ended.

How to apply

The easiest and fastest way to apply to renew your grant is to log in to your portal account. On your patient dashboard, you will find the patient name, disease fund, and the balance of the grant. If you are eligible, there will be a button under the “actions” column to apply to renew your grant.

Click “renew now” and you will go to a pre-screen questionnaire. Review and complete the pre-screening process. After a successful renewal, an enrollment confirmation page will appear.

You may need to take any other actions, such as income verification or health insurance premium verification, for a renewal grant. Please note the instructions in the portal.

If your grant was not approved

If you are not approved for a second or renewal grant, we will refer you to other organizations that may be able to help. We also encourage you to sign up for FundFinder, a web-based app where you can follow any fund you want and get notified immediately when funding is available for programs at nine charitable foundations.
