The PAN Foundation is leading a critical national effort to address the growing threat of alternative funding programs (AFPs) in employer-sponsored health plans.
These programs, while often misunderstood, can deny patients access to the medications they need—particularly those with complex, chronic, or life-threatening conditions.
AFPs may seem like a cost-saving strategy for employers, but the reality is stark. Patients become functionally uninsured, facing insurmountable barriers to treatment. Out-of-pocket costs skyrocket, putting lifesaving therapies out of reach.
PAN’s AFP educational initiative brings this issue into focus through awareness and education campaigns, advocacy tools, and trusted resources for patients, employers, and the healthcare community.

Impact-to-date
Since the PAN Foundation launched our first AFP educational campaign in November 2024, we’ve seen significant engagement:
340,000+ individuals reached via PAN’s targeted communications
4,000+ views of PAN’s animated explainer videos and AFP resource pages (English & Spanish)
27 toolkits shared with patient advocacy partners
This is just the beginning. Our goal is to reach patients, healthcare providers, employers, and other healthcare stakeholders with the information, resources, and education they need to navigate alternative funding programs and highlight the heavy costs they inflict on patients. But we need your support.
