Information About the Disease

Gaucher disease is a genetic disease in which a fatty substance (lipid) collects in cells and certain organs such as the spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, brain and bone marrow. As a result, cells fill up with the undigested fat, referred to as Gaucher cells. The disease's bone-related symptoms can be particularly painful and debilitating, impairing a patient's mobility, and can cause delays in growth and development in children. In rare cases, the brain and nervous system are affected.
