Information About the Disease

Solid Organ Transplant Immunosuppressant Therapy (including Kidney) Fund covers immunosuppressant therapies following a transplant of the kidney, liver, heart, lung, simultaneous heart-lung, pancreas, and simultaneous kidney-pancreas. Patient and organ survival is dependent on the use of immunosuppressant drugs. Although the combination of drugs differs from patient to patient they are always given in two phases. The first phase, called induction, carries higher doses just after the transplant surgery. The second phase is called the maintenance phase. The doses are reduced several months after the surgery to low maintenance phase levels.
