Cancer can invade nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body. In the United States, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men. The prostate is one of the male sex glands, located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and it surrounds part of the urethra. The prostate makes fluid that becomes part of the semen. Prostate cancer typically grows at a slow rate. Once the outer rim of the prostate has been penetrated, the cancer may possibly spread (metastasize) directly into the channels of tissue and other major organs. If prostate cancer spreads, it initially attacks the lymph nodes enclosed in the pelvis. The risk for developing prostate cancer increases with age. Risk factors include being over 55 years old, having a family history of cancer, being African-American, having an enlarged prostate, and being exposed to sexually transmitted viral agents. In addition, diet and exercise may contribute to the risk for prostate cancer. For more information about the disease please visit www.prostatecancerfoundation.org. |
